No need to be frightened or intimidated at the thought of re-painting your cabinets. Keep reading to learn how to easily and inexpensively refinish your cabinets!

Why Fusion Mineral Paint?

Fusion has a built in top coat. The 100% acrylic resin acts as the “glue and so results in fantastic adhesion and long-term super durability. It is a waterproof, non-porous surface which is why you don’t typically need an additional top coat.

Fusion is non-toxic, lead free, virtually odourless. It has no ammonia or formaldehyde and it has zero volatile organic compounds (VOC’s).

Materials Used:

  • TSP or good degreasing cleaner - I used LA's Totally Awesome Orange
  • Sandpaper - 200 grit
  • Fusion Ultra Grip
  • Fusion Mineral Paint in Liberty Blue

1. PREP

Before - I've always regretted picking counters the same colour as my cabinets. What was I thinking?

Before - I've always regretted picking counters the same colour as my cabinets. What was I thinking?

If you’re going to spend your precious time refinishing your cabinets, do not scrimp on the prep! Read more “PREP is not a bad 4 letter word!” .

This prep step took me no more than 10 minutes and it's so worth it!

Your cabinets were typically professionally finished to repel grease, splashes, food, dirty fingers and as a result the finish also repels a new paint job!  Cabinets have many finishes (Laminate, Melamine, Lacquered, Varnished ...) and you will need to prep to make any paint (Fusion included) adhere. PREP is the key to a fantastic result.

1.1 Wipe your cabinets with a de-greaser or TSP and then rinse the cabinets with clean water and wipe dry.

1.2 Then sand lightly

Just a light scuff sand - nothing crazy

Just a light scuff sand - nothing crazy

Your surface plays a direct role to the finish of your project. The paint is only as stable as your substrate (the current surface you wish to paint). If your project is glossy, previously coated with a lacquer, or potentially has a wax finish on it, you simply must prep your piece for guaranteed results, there is just no cutting corners for a flawless perfect finish!

If your surface is a synthetic finish like laminate or melamine and is still very shiny, apply a coat of Ultra Grip and allow it to dry for 12 hours.

Excellent coverage with two coats

Excellent coverage with two coats

Apply 1 to 2 coats of Fusion Mineral Paint waiting 12 hours between coats. Fusion Mineral Paint has incredible coverage, however it’s always best to apply two coats rather than trying to get it all done in one thicker coat. You’ll find your first coat will do 95%, and that second coat will cover anything that you missed.

Take the doors off (as painting them horizontally is a best practice,) but if you want to leave them on - no worries! Just leave the doors open while you wait 12 hours between coats.

To get the best from Fusion’s self-levelling properties, practice makes perfect. Before you start painting, wet your brush and give it a good shake. Let the brush do the work for you and minimize brush strokes by having just enough paint on the brush, so the paint will self-level. Too much paint and you will leave brush marks behind. Practice makes perfect! If, despite your best efforts, you end up with texture you don’t like, you can gently sand the brush strokes away.

Do my cabinets need a top coat?

ToughCoat

Fusion Mineral Paint has a built-in top coat, so no top coat is needed! That said, there are two reasons you may want to add our Tough Coat.

- in high splash zones like kitchens or bathrooms, there is no harm adding another layer of protection.

- if you’re looking for a little more sheen than the signature matte finish of Fusion Mineral Paint, Tough Coat will finish to a beautiful satin sheen. It also has a proven non-yellowing formula so they won’t yellow your pristine freshly painted white cabinets!

What can you paint with a Fusion Mineral Paint 37ml sample pot?

Fusion Mineral Paint 37ml sample pot

Fusion Mineral Paint typically comes in a one pint size, enough to paint a medium size dresser, a small table and a couple of smaller projects.

These cute little sample pots are now in our West Kelowna shop and are a great way to try a new colour.  For just $4.99 you’ll be surprised with the coverage! A little goes a long way - look at all the frames done with one sample pot of Prairie Sunset! Each of the three frames has two coats. And these are not small frames - the yardstick shows how big the frames are!

Make Your Own Painted Skates

Fusion Mineral Paint in Fort York Red is the perfect red for these skates I recently did for a Christmas Market in Kelowna. These were so popular I'm going to be running a two part workshop at 1:30 on Saturday Nov 28 and Sunday Nov 29th so you can make your own!

You supply the skates and for $39.99, We supply the how-to's, the paint for the boots and the blades, fancy ribbon for the laces, the material so you can make the mock sock trim and the pretty floral pic to poke out the tops. If you want to glitter I'll provide that too! And what winter crafting is complete without hot chocolate!

How To Paint Sleek Ikea Laminate Furniture

IKEA is famous for their real wood veneer and the MALM two drawer chest is a sleek, sturdy piece that can also be used as a nightstand.

What do you do when you’re tired of the finish and it’s time to change your decor? Paint it with Fusion™ Mineral Paint!

The same shiny veneer surface that makes IKEA pieces super durable creates a challenge for adhesion.

It’s easy to resolve with a few simple prep steps. Simply clean the surface to be painted and sand lightly with a 220 grit sandpaper to roughen the surface. Then apply one coat of Fusion Ultra Grip.

Ultra Grip is a water-based concentrated acrylic emulsion that allows for Fusion™ Mineral Paint to adhere to surfaces that are typically not for painting such as veneer, a lacquered surface, laminate, metal or glass.

Allow to dry for 12 hours before applying subsequent coats of Fusion™ Mineral Paint.

Each coat of Fusion also needs 12 hours to dry between coats. The paint will be dry to the touch within an hour or so, and will need 21 days to fully cure to a hard durable, washable surface. Beautiful!

Can Fusion Mineral Paint Withstand Three Messy Boys?

My daughter Brandy is a busy mom of three messy and super adorable boys.

Brandy was chatting up one of her friends about using my paint to redo the friend's kitchen table. Brandy called to ask, "No really. How durable is it?" She didn't want to encourage her friend to use it only to have it fail.

I assured her Fusion Mineral Paint is extremely durable because it's water-based 100% acrylic formulated paint using the best top quality ingredients. It has a built in top coat, and has a super strong adhesion once it dries and cures for 21 days.

Then I promised her we would do our own durability experiment.

I painted up a small table in one of pretty light colours Aubusson.

Brandy, hubby Rob and their mini-entourage arrived for vacation 21 days later. When I asked my eldest grandson to put ketchup, spaghetti with meat sauce, and cucumbers on the table and then to use the felt markers to label it all, he thought I was PURE CRAZY!

After some convincing, he got right into it!

We left it for 24 hours. Then we cleaned it off using a mild dish soap. The ketchup was the hardest to get off and took some scrubbing! Man that stuff sticks on good!

The results were perfect, no stains!

The Best Way to Apply Tough Coat

Tough Coat Both

Our Tough Coat uses 100% pure acrylic resin and is perfect as a sealer for high traffic surfaces such as table tops, seating, doors and floors. It dries to a satin finish. Unlike most of our competitors, it is non-yellowing.

Both the brands of Tough Coat that I carry are the same and are made by Homestead House in Toronto!

No matter what the type or quality of the product, top coating is one of the most difficult furniture finishing steps to get right.

Spraying can give a premium finish, but not everyone has the equipment nor the space to set up a spray area.

Brushing can work but it takes a lot of practice to perfect the technique.

What if I told you I found a way to apply Tough Coat that gives a great finish every time?

Do The Wet Hot Dog Roll

Allow your freshly painted item to dry for 12 hours.

Wet a microfibre cloth and squeeze it out thoroughly. Fold the cloth into the width of a hot dog and tightly roll it up to about the size of a hot dog bun.

Lee Valley Squeeze Bottles

Lee Valley Squeeze Bottles

Mark a 500ml Lee Valley squeeze bottle as Diluted Tough Coat. Learn from my mistakes and don’t bother with the dollar store squirt bottles. They leak like mad and make a big mess! The best dilution is 10:1. That’s ten parts Touch Coat and 1 part water.

Gently mix Tough Coat (but don’t shake as that introduces air bubbles) to blend the matting agent with the acrylic. Add 200ml Tough Coat and 20ml water to the squirt bottle.

Hold the roll and dampen it along one smooth edge using the squirt bottle. Wipe the roll over the surface in a row from left to right in one long stroke. Do not go back over the same area twice. Missed areas will be covered in the next coat. Repeat going along in rows across the piece. Re-wet the roll when you start to seeing streaks. Now step away! Do not be tempted to touch anything up!

Thoroughly rinse your microfibre cloth in clear running water between coats.

Repeat every two to four hours until you have two or three coats. The top will be dry to the touch in a few hours, but will take 21 days to cure.
